A memorial service for Larry George Pappas, 48, of Peru, Nebraska, who died June 19, 1995, was held Thursday, June 22, at Benford Recital Hall, Peru State College, at Peru with the Rev· Barry Rempp officiating. Funeral services were held Monday, June 26, at First United Methodist Church in Gering with the Revs. Robert Call and James Irwin officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

He was born November 16, 1946, in Chadron to Theodore George and Betty Jane (Ruff) Pappas. He received his early education in the public elementary and high schools of Gering. He earned a bachelor of science degree at Hiram Scott College in Scottsbluff in 1971. He obtained his master's degree in zoology from the University of Wyoming in 1971 and earned his doctorate degree in entamology from the University of Illinois in 1975. He then obtained a post doctorate, VPI at Blacksburg Entamology in Virginia. He was certified in CPR. He was on varsity teams for football, basketball and baseball. On September 8,1972, he married Carol Dianne Hilfiker in Champaign, Illinois. He made numerous contributions to the field of biology and education. He performed research work in Radford, Virginia, for a period of time. He was a professor at the College of Saint Theresa, an all-girls school. He became a professor of biology at Peru State College in 1979. He specialized in various research projects and obtained numerous grants for the college. He and Dr. Carol Howard, discovered a new species of insects together and named it, Culicoides elemae, after their daughters.
Survivors include his daughters Ellen Catherine Pappas of Tallahassee, Florida, and Emily Lenora Pappas of Valdosta, Georgia; father Ted Pappas and his wife Judy of Gering; sister Dianalynn Ridings of Salem, Oregon; brother Michael T. Pappas of Gering; and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents.
