John Randall “Randy” O’Bannon, 61 of Gering, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 from injuries he suffered in a traffic accident. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Michael Stein officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery
Randy was born on July 29, 1947 in Worcester, Mass. to Randall and Ann O’Bannon. He was educated in the Gering school system and graduated in 1965. Randy worked in the potato industry for many years and suffered a major brain injury in 1987 as the result of a motorcycle accident. Following his rehabilitation, he established his own lawn care company and recycling business. He was affectionately known by his family and friends as the “Dumpster Diver.”
Survivors include his best friend, Barbara Munger of Gering; brother, Richard O’Bannon of Lisco; sister, Ruth Fehr and husband, Duane of Greeley, Colo.; daughters, Brandi Hilwein of Corpus Christi, Texas and Suzanne Buskol of Kansas City, Kan. He is also survived by three nephews and several grandchildren.
